Dr Lewis Kingsnorth DC MChiro

Certified Shockwave Specialist | Founder, Hove Shockwave | GCC Registered Chiropractor

GCC Registration No. 3359 | Qualified 2009 | Nearly 20 Years in Clinical Practice

Most patients who come to Hove Shockwave have already tried other things. A course of physiotherapy. Steroid injections that wore off. A GP who said to rest and wait. They arrive frustrated, often in pain for months or years, and wondering whether anything can actually help.

My job is to find out what is genuinely driving their problem, apply the right treatment with precision, and give them an honest answer about what is achievable. After nearly 20 years in clinical practice and well over 100,000 patient consultations, that is what I do every day.

Why I Specialise in Shockwave Therapy

I first encountered shockwave therapy over a decade ago, when it was still relatively unknown in UK clinical practice outside of elite sport. The evidence base was compelling, the technology was advancing rapidly, and the results I was seeing in patients who had failed every other conservative treatment were remarkable. I committed to it.

Today, Hove Shockwave is Brighton and Hove’s most advanced shockwave clinic. We offer three technologies — focused shockwave, radial shockwave, and EMTT — and I am personally trained and certified in all three. I have invested in the best available equipment, including the Magnetolith EMTT device, which is the same technology used by Premier League football clubs and elite sports medicine organisations. We are one of fewer than 30 clinics in the UK offering it.

I chose to build a specialist shockwave clinic rather than adding shockwave as an add-on service to a general practice because I believe depth of expertise matters. When you see me at Hove Shockwave, shockwave therapy is not something I do occasionally — it is what I do every day, and it shows in the results.

My Background

Chiropractic was not an abstract career choice for me. At 18, I suffered a significant disc prolapse during sport. The pain was severe and the prognosis uncertain. Chiropractic treatment was central to my recovery — getting me back to full fitness and competitive sport within six months, without surgery and without long-term medication. That experience shaped everything that followed.

I enrolled at the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic and graduated with a Masters of Chiropractic (MChiro) with Upper Class Honours. I have been in continuous full-time clinical practice since 2009. I founded Chiropractic First in Hove in 2006 while still completing my degree, and established Hove Shockwave as a dedicated specialist shockwave clinic to serve patients across Brighton, Hove, and East Sussex who needed something beyond what standard physiotherapy and injection therapy could offer.

What I Treat at Hove Shockwave

My clinical focus at Hove Shockwave is on chronic and persistent musculoskeletal conditions where conventional treatment has plateaued or failed, and on specialist conditions that require specific technologies to treat effectively.

Musculoskeletal and tendon conditions:

       Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy

Rotator cuff tendinopathy and calcific tendinitis

Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow (lateral and medial epicondylitis)

Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee) and knee osteoarthritis

Chronic lower back pain and herniated disc conditions

Greater trochanteric bursitis (lateral hip pain)

Shin splints and chronic lower limb pain

       Frozen shoulder and shoulder impingement

Men's health:

I established Brighton and Hove’s first clinic treating erectile dysfunction with focused shockwave therapy. This is a service I am personally committed to because it addresses a condition that affects millions of men but remains widely undertreated due to stigma and a lack of accessible, effective options. Every men’s health appointment is conducted by me personally, in a completely private and discreet setting.

NESA Neuromodulation:

I am one of a small number of approved NESA practitioners in the UK. NESA is a non-invasive neuromodulation therapy that works through the autonomic nervous system using microcurrents, and I use it for patients with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, sleep disorders, overactive bladder, and chronic widespread pain. For patients who have struggled to find effective treatment for these conditions elsewhere, NESA often provides meaningful relief where nothing else has.

EMTT — The Technology That Sets Hove Shockwave Apart

Of the technologies I have introduced to Hove Shockwave, EMTT is the one I am most proud of. Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy uses high-intensity magnetic pulses to penetrate deeper into tissue than any conventional shockwave device — reaching structures that radial and focused shockwave cannot access. It is completely painless and touch-free, making it suitable for acutely painful or swollen joints where conventional shockwave would be uncomfortable.

Being one of fewer than 30 clinics in the UK with this technology is not something I take lightly. Patients come to Hove Shockwave specifically because of it — from Brighton, from further afield across East and West Sussex, and sometimes from London — having been told by other clinics that their condition is difficult to treat. In many cases, EMTT changes that picture entirely.

My Approach to Clinical Care

I do not believe in treating symptoms in isolation. Every patient who comes to Hove Shockwave receives a thorough initial assessment — a detailed history, a physical examination, and where indicated, diagnostic imaging using our on-site digital X-ray or by arranging private MRI access. I want to understand what is actually happening before I recommend any course of treatment.

I am direct with patients about what I think is achievable. If I believe shockwave therapy is unlikely to help, I say so and point them in a better direction. If I believe it will help, I explain why, what the evidence shows, and what they should realistically expect. I find that patients respond better to honesty than to vague reassurance, and that outcomes are better when patients understand their own condition.

Long-term results come from combining the right treatment with the right rehabilitation and lifestyle guidance. I do not want patients dependent on ongoing appointments — I want them better and self-managing. That has been my clinical philosophy for nearly two decades, and it is reflected in the outcomes I see.

Outside the Clinic

When I am not at the clinic, you will find me on the volleyball court, on skis, out hiking, or training jiu-jitsu. I believe that staying active is the best investment anyone can make in their long-term health — and that the person treating you should be an example of the advice they give.

Why I built Hove Shockwave

I founded Hove Shockwave because I kept seeing patients who had been living with pain for years — sometimes decades — who had simply never been offered the right treatment. Shockwave therapy, EMTT and NESA are not widely available in Sussex. Most clinics do not have the equipment, the training, or the certification to offer them properly.

My goal was to bring clinic-grade specialist technology to Hove, administered with proper clinical assessment and diagnosis — not as an add-on to a general practice, but as a dedicated specialist service. That is what Hove Shockwave is.

Outside the clinic, I'm a very active person — I train in ju jitsu, play volleyball, and understand first-hand what it means to put your body through its paces and need it to recover properly. I'm also a big believer in self-care therapies and practise what I preach when it comes to looking after the body. When I'm not treating patients or training, you'll find me travelling or spending time with my family and my son, who take up most of my time and energy in the best possible way.

I think that matters, because when a patient comes to me with a sports injury, chronic pain, or a body that just isn't working the way it should — I get it. Not just clinically, but personally.
